How We Got Here
Coming off of last season's 0-10 campaign, the only direction was up for the Manhattanville women's tennis team entering the new season. The team ran with the mindset, already winning their highest number of matches since the 2006-07 season even before the conclusion of fall play. The Valiants enter the postseason with a 6-3 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Skyline action, with the two conference losses coming to the two teams above them in the postseason bracket.
Manhattanville's top four of
Bea Pretnar (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.),
Addison-Mercedes Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services),
Suzi Doyle (Devon, England/Exeter College) and
Keto Karkashadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/New School International) have been stellar all season and have been crucial to the team's success. Pretnar and Karkashadze went 7-1 as a No. 1 Doubles pairing in the regular season, dropping only a match to non-conference opponent Ramapo, while the rookie tandem of Ortiz and Doyle finished 8-1 in their doubles play. Their lone blemish? A 6-8 loss against the Farmingdale Rams they'll face on the opposite side of the net today. Ortiz also excelled in solos, winning all nine of her singles draws as a mainstay in the No. 2 flight. Pretnar finished the regular season 7-1 in No. 1 singles, going 5-0 on the court against Skyline opposition.
Farmingdale are the reigning conference champions, looking to win their fourth title in the last five seasons. The Rams secured the No. 2 seed following a 5-1 conference schedule as part of a 10-3 overall fall campaign. Farmingdale's lone Skyline loss came against regular-season champs Saint Joseph's Long Island in a 3-6 defeat as the Golden Eagles ran the table with a perfect record against the conference. The Rams ended the regular season on a high note with two straight wins, dropping only three flights combined against Hunter and Purchase to close out the year.
Last Time Out
The teams met at Farmingdale back on Sept. 27, with the Rams earning a 5-4 victory. Farmingdale won two of the three doubles flights, with Pretnar and Karkashadze the lone winners for Manhattanville in the top flight, before the teams split the six singles matchups. Manhattanville's top three—Pretnar, Ortiz and Doyle—were victorious in their respective flights, but the Rams were able to take care of business in the bottom three flights to secure the match win.
