Box Score 2 Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – The Manhattanville College men's tennis team kicked off their 2023-24 season this past weekend at the King's College Invitational. The Valiants were able to compete across five singles and a pair of doubles flights. One individual would find himself victorious amongst the team across the two days.
In the No. 1 Doubles bracket,
James Hourihan (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and
Shiel Loganadan (New York, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends) would defeat Elizabethtown's Max Lauver and Stefanos Billis 8-7 (2-0) in quarterfinals. They would then advance to the semifinals where they would fall 0-8 to the duo of Thomas Hallahan and Harry Becraft from Susquehanna University.
The second doubles flight of
Carter Hunter-Crump (Denver, Colo./Centaurus) and
Derwin Guzman (Harlem, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) would find the same result. The duo would defeat Chase Cavanagh and Eli Harding from Misericordia in the quarterfinals, 8-0. Hunter-Crump and Guzman would then be knocked off in the semifinals by Fairleigh Dickinson University's Kevin Liwag and Brandon Schwartz, 6-8.
In singles competition, Hourihan would play in the No. 1 bracket and win his quarterfinal match 6-3, 6-3 against Matthew Emery from Fairleigh Dickinson. He would then fall to Scranton's Maxwell Dombrowski in the semifinals, 4-6, 2-6.
Loganadan would go on to pick up a pair of wins for Manhattanville in the No. 2 bracket. After defeating Dalton Alexander of Misericordia, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, Loganadan would drop the first set of his semifinals matchup against Scranton's Jason Budrys, 4-6. The senior would bounce back with a 6-3 win in the second set and then a thrilling 11-9 breaker. He would go down 5-9 before saving four match points and coming out victorious. Loganadan would then fall in the final 1-6, 2-6 to John Toussaint from King's College.
Making his collegiate debut on the courts, Hunter-Crump would play in the No. 3 singles flight. He would defeat Misericordia's Cavanaugh 6-4, 6-2. He would then fall to King's Patrick Pech 2-6, 2-6 who would go on to win the bracket.
Joining Hunter-Crump for firsts,
Griffin Forberg (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) would compete in his first match of the season and his collegiate career. He would showcase the best performance by a Valiant for the weekend. Forberg would go on to win his quarterfinals match 6-1, 6-2 against King's Aidan Temple. He would keep the good times rolling as he defeated Owen Miller from Susquehanna 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. He would then emerge victorious in the No. 4 bracket finals 6-1, 6-0 against Scranton's Steven Prosperino, logging the only Manhattanville win.
Guzman would round out the team's competition in the No. 5 singles bracket with another riveting performance. He would defeat Fairleigh Dickinson's Quinn Carmody-Kaczor by default. Guzman would then win his semifinals match against Domanick Young from Lycoming 6-1, 6-2. He would be knocked off in the finals by Scranton's Harrison Clark in a tight 6-3, 7-6 (3-0), 6-10 loss.
