PURCHASE, N.Y. – Addison Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./High School for Health Professions and Human Services) of the Manhattanville University women's tennis team and
Emma Masie (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) of field hockey have been named Valiants of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 5.
Ortiz went undefeated last week, sporting a perfect 4-0 record across Manhattanville's two matches. On Wednesday against Purchase, she partnered with
Jenifer Lalman (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) to take on Novalie Nguyen and Katelin Smith in a 6-0 win in the No. 2 flight before defeating Sierra Blanco in No. 3 Singles, 6-3, 6-1. Ortiz' efforts helped the Valiants match the best start in program history, improving to 4-0. While Manhattanville ultimately suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday in a hard-fought battle against Drew, Ortiz continued to shine with a 7-6 (7-3) No. 1 Doubles victory with
Adrianna Filippelli (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) over Riley Roesel and Natalia Melendez Sacnhez before defeating Danielle Pettoni in No. 2s, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Masie provided the whole of the offense in field hockey's lone contest last week. The freshman found the back of the cage in Wednesday's 1-0 win at Gordon, lifting the team to a 3-3 record on the road this year. The goal was Masie's second of the season and her first game-winning tally.
