PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshman Megan Greene (Jamestown, R.I.) finished with three points as the Valiant field hockey team's winning streak moved to four games with a 4-1 victory over Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday evening at GoValiants.com Field.
Tonight's victory marks the longest winning streak for current head coach Kevin Kelly and the longest streak since the beginning of the 2007 season, when the team won five straight contests early in the year.
The Valiant offense continued to shine tonight, taking nine shots with five reaching the net. Four different Valiants scored in the contest, beginning with an assist from Greene on a crisp pass to junior Alyssa Nardone (Closter, N.J.) slashing to the goal for her fifth tally of the season in the sixth minute.
Greene gave the Valiants a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute with a shot from inside the circle, giving her a team-leading seven goals on the season. The Valiants finished the first half with a 5-3 edge in shots, and more importantly a 2-0 lead.
Manhattanville added to its lead at the 51:15 mark, as junior Colleen Macedo (Norwalk, Conn.) found classmate Alyssa Coughlan (Rye, N.Y.) for a blast from the top of the circle. The Colonials got on the board in the 64th minute, as Lauren Atkinson split away from the Manhattanville defense and scored stick side on freshman netminder Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.).
The Valiants answered back 30 seconds later, as sophomore Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa.) scored her sixth of the season on a breakaway. WCSU keeper Jaimie Kenealy took two steps out of the crease and attempted to dive on the ball, but Meenan's shot went towards the far post to give the Valiants a 4-1 advantage and put the game away.
Grant held the Valiants in the contest by making four saves, while her counterpart Kenealy made one save.
The weather turned chilly but that did not stop the Valiant fans from cheering on their team to victory, which included a special guest to GoValiants.com Field as New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi was spotted in the crowd rooting on the Valiants.
