PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ontario) recorded her second Freedom Conference hat trick of the season to lead the Manhattanville women's soccer team to its second conference win of the season, a 4-0 shutout of King's (Pa.) College on a sunny and cool Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Nonis netted three against a Freedom foe for the second time this season, as seven of her nine goals in 2010 have come in just four Freedom Conference matches. After tying her career-best with a six-point day, the senior moved into fourth place on the school's all-time points list with 97 and is now just three points away from 100 for her career.
Sophomore Morgan Rebollal (Holtsville, N.Y.) also scored for Manhattanville and added an assist for three points, while three others Valiants recorded assists in the victory.
The home team controlled play for almost the entire match against the outmatched Monarchs, taking 18 shots to the visitors' five and also holding a 12-3 edge in shots on goal and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Nonis by herself took eight shots, with five reaching the target and three finding the back of the net.
The first goal came not off the foot of Nonis but of Rebollal, as she picked up her third goal of the season at 9:57 for the eventual game-winner. The play started with sophomore Brittney Smith (Stratford, Conn.) coming down the right side and firing a nice cross across the box to senior Gina Hayes (Cutchogue, N.Y.) at the back post. Hayes then laid the ball back to the penalty spot for Rebollal, who came onto the ball nicely and fired it past King's keeper Melissa D'Anniello to open the scoring.
The Valiants doubled their lead less than 10 minutes later, with Nonis scoring the first of three on the day. Rebollal was on the other end of the play this time, as she sprung Nonis for a breakaway score at the 19:04 mark of the first half.
Manhattanville did not score for the remainder of the frame, yet still went into intermission with an 11-2 shot edge.
The Valiant lead increased to three 15:32 into the second half on a nice individual effort from the senior forward, as she stole the ball from a defender and then went around multiple Monarchs inside the box before finding the back of the net. Nonis completed the fourth hat trick of her career just over 10 minutes later, taking a pass down the right-hand side from junior Amanda Suiso (Honolulu, Hawaii) and blasting the ball past D'Anniello.
For Manhattanville (2-11-1, 2-1-1 Freedom), the win keeps them in a tie for third place in the conference with three games remaining in the regular season. The Valiants will face off with one of the two teams ahead of them in the standings, FDU-Florham, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Madison, N.J. King's (1-14-0, 0-4-0 Freedom) hosts Wilkes University also on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
