PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshman Megan Greene (Jamestown, R.I.) scored with five seconds left remaining in the second overtime to give the Manhattanville field hockey team a thrilling 4-3 (2OT) victory over the DeSales Bulldogs in a Freedom Conference match on Wednesday afternoon.
Four different Valiants scored in the contest, which saw Manhattanville take a two-goal lead in the first half before allowing three straight goals to fall behind. Sophomore Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa.) was a top performer for the Valiants on the evening as she finished with four points on a pair of goals, while senior Jen Ascencio (Monroe, N.Y.) had two assists to help the team to victory.
Manhattanville took an early 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs, scoring first in the sixth minute. Meenan began the play with a cross off a penalty corner, allowing Ascencio to receive the pass before dishing out to Macedo who blasted a shot to the far post. Leading by a goal, the Valiants added to their lead as Meenan received a pass from freshman Cherstyn Powell (Chico, Calif.) and gave the Valiants a two-goal edge in the 15th minute.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit in half in the 22nd minute as Karissa Hunsicker re-directed a shot from Jamie Matthews in the 22nd minute. DeSales began the second half with a pair of goals to take the lead as Hunsicker sent a cross inside the goal mouth to Kelsey Strowhouser in the 45th minute to tie the contest at 2-2. DeSales broke the tie and scored their third goal in a row a minute later as Matthews one-timed a pass from Carly Kunkel.
The Valiants tied the contest at 3-3 nine minutes later in the 55th minute, as Meenan scored a tap-in goal off a cross by Macedo.
In the overtime period, the Valiants killed off a yellow card infraction early as the defensive unit allowed just one shot to face freshman netminder Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.). In the second overtime, the Bulldogs came out looking to win the contest, but five saves by Grant kept her team alive. The only shot for the Valiants in the final extra time was all the visitors needed, as Ascencio sent a pass over the top of the defense to Greene, whose shot went thru the legs of the DeSales netminder Victoria Deltoro to give the Valiants a huge win.
The Bulldogs finished the contest with a 19-12 advantage in shots and penalty corners (12-8), but Manhattanville held the lead where it counted - on the scoreboard.
In goal for the Valiants, Grant was phenomenal in finishing with 10 saves for her seventh victory of the season, while Deltoro made five saves in the overtime loss. Prior to the contest, Grant was awarded her second Freedom Conference Goalie of the Week award after a stellar two games against Western Connecticut State and Delaware Valley.
