PURCHASE, N.Y. –
Despite playing well for most of the afternoon, three late goals in a second half took the Manhattanville field hockey team out of the game and allowed King's (Pa.) to escape with a 4-1 victory at GoValiants.com Field in Freedom Conference play on Saturday.

The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as Jackie Sikora got some help in traffic as her cross found the back post to be tapped in by Abby McManus for her second of the season. The visiting team outshot the Valiants 8-4 in the opening stanza, but six saves from freshman Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.) kept her team alive.

Manhattanville stuck in the second half as senior Jen Ascencio (Monroe, N.Y.) scored her fourth of the season in the 43rd minute with a high backhand shot. Junior Alyssa Coughlan (Rye, N.Y.) began the rush for the Valiant with a pass towards the middle of the circle to find Ascencio.

King's broke the tie with three unanswered goals in a span of 2:52 as Calli Berryman scored twice along with a goal from Jenera Quinones. Berryman gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead as Shelby Trenge found Berryman after a penalty corner.  King's took a two-goal lead 1:25 later, as Quinones scored unassisted with a shot from the top of the circle. Berryman finished the contest with a goal in the 70th minute off a breakaway after receiving a pass from Shawna Walp.

The visiting team outshot the Valiants 22-10 in the contest and also held a 9-6 lead in penalty corners. Grant finished the contest with 14 saves, while her counterpart Erin McGinley made six. Manhattanville freshman Megan Wittner (Niskayuna, N.Y.) helped her goalie out making two defensive saves in the contest as well.

Manhattanville (8-9, 2-4 Freedom) will head to FDU-Florham for a Freedom conference match on Tuesday at 7 p.m. King's (Pa.) will host DeSales on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
