PURCHASE, N.Y.
– It may not have been pretty and certainly was not completely satisfying, but the 100th career point of senior Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ontario) helped the Manhattanville women's soccer team pick up the point it needed to clinch a berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament, as the Valiants played to a 2-2 (2OT) draw with Delaware Valley College in both teams' 2010 regular-season finale on a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

With the tie, Manhattanville (3-13-2, 3-2-2 Freedom) secured the third seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament, meaning that the team will travel to second-seeded Eastern University (13-4-1, 6-1-0 Freedom) on Wednesday in a rematch of last year's championship game. FDU-Florham (13-5-2, 6-0-1), which defeated Eastern in overtime today to earn the top seed, will host Misericordia University (12-5-2, 3-3-1 Freedom) in the other semifinal on Wednesday.

Appropriately enough on Senior Day, it was a pair of seniors – Nonis and Ali Bromson (Suffield, Conn.) – who played vital roles in Manhattanville's tie. Nonis scored the first goal of the match in the 10th minute to give the Valiants an early lead, while Bromson kept the Aggies from the win they needed to reach the postseason by making nine crucial saves, including one with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match.

Nonis got the Valiants on the board early, as sophomore Morgan Rebollal (Holtsville, N.Y.) played a through ball to the senior and she dribbled around the goalkeeper before depositing the ball into an empty net. For Nonis, the 42nd goal of her career made her just the fourth player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau and the first since Susan Horton '03 in 2002.

Bromson, meanwhile, did everything she could to keep Delaware Valley out of the net, making three saves in the first half, five in the second half and one in overtime to keep the score tied.

After Nonis' goal put the home team up early, the Valiants seemed to be headed into halftime with a lead before Aggie senior Elise Carpenter fired a rocket from inside the box that found the top-left corner and tied the score after 45 minutes.

The Valiants bounced back in the 70th minute, when a corner kick from Natalie Green (Vernon, Conn.) was inadvertently directed into the goal by an Aggie defender. The home team could not keep the lead again, however, as junior Merissa Ruth followed up a shot by freshman Marianne Horton that caromed off the crossbar and touched it in for the game-tying score at 78:46.

Neither team generated any great opportunities in the two overtime periods, but DVC junior Dana Gentile had a good chance with 24 seconds remaining go right at Bromson to keep the match tied and allow the Valiants to escape with the point.

For the match, Delaware Valley had a slight 16-14 edge in total shots and an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal. Nonis led all players with seven total shots (three on target), while Gentile had five overall attempts for the visitors. Aggie keeper Miranda Schieler made six saves for the visitors.

As of Saturday night, no game time has been announced for Wednesday's Freedom Conference semifinal between the Valiants and Eagles in St. Davids, Pa. Check GoValiants.com in the coming days for more information on the Freedom Conference Tournament.
