PURCHASE, N.Y. –
The Manhattanville field hockey team needed just 37 seconds to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 4-1 victory over Richard Stockton College on Wednesday evening at GoValiants.com Field.

Four different Valiants scored in the contest, as they unleashed 16 shots on goal that made for a long evening for Ospreys' netminder Debi O'Kane. The Valiants got on the board early in the first half, as junior Colleen Macedo (Norwalk, Conn.) sent a cross from the near endline to freshman Cherstyn Powell (Chico, Calif.) at the back post for her first collegiate tally in the fourth minute.

Richard Stockton answered back with a goal in the 10th minute, as the initial shot from Nancy White was deflected in front of the net by Susie Balidemaj to tie the contest at 1-1. The Valiants wasted little time regaining the lead off the restart as junior Alyssa Nardone (Closter, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season with a shot from the left side of the circle at the 10:00 minute mark.

The Valiants scored once more in the first half, as sophomore Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y.) found classmate Alex Pomato (Niskayuna, N.Y.) for her team-leading fifth goal of the season with a cross from the right side that found Pomato at the back post.  The Valiants held just a 9-7 edge in shots after the first half, but all nine were on target.

The Valiants were successful in killing off a five-minute yellow card to Pomato in the 48th minute. About ten minutes later, freshman Megan Wittner (Niskayuna, N.Y.) made an incredible defensive save on Stockton's Megan Irving to keep the Valiants ahead by two.

Manhattanville iced the game in the 66th minute as senior Jen Ascencio (Monroe, N.Y.) sent a cross to sophomore Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa.) for her third goal of the season to give the Valiants a three-goal lead.  Once again the Valiants finished ahead of Stockton in shots in the second half with a 10-7 margin.

The Valiants finished the contest with a 19-14 shots advantage and doubled the visitors in the amount on target (16-8). Manhattanville also had a 12-7 lead in penalty corners over the Ospreys.

Goaltending was great on both ends of the field, as freshman netminder Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.) made six saves for the Valiants for her third victory of the season, while O'Kane made 12 saves but was dealt her 10th loss of the season.

Manhattanville (4-7, 0-2 Freedom) will return to action on Saturday morning as the Valiants host Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference match beginning at 11 a.m. at GoValiants.com Field.
