POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville field hockey team dropped an evenly matched contest to Vassar College, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Betty Richey Tournament at Weinberg Field.
Trailing 1-0 after a goal in the seventh minute by Emily Meiser, sophomore Alex Pomato (Niskayuna, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season to tie the contest with just over four minutes left in the first half. Classmate Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa.) started the attack for the Valiants as she sent a cross to Pomato inside the box to beat Brewers netminder Rachel Horwitz.
The host Brewers answered back 2:27 later to take the lead once again as Jessica Lance sent a cross over to Madeline Rooney for her first of two goals on the afternoon. In the 42nd minute, Rooney added an insurance tally to give the home team a 3-1 edge. Manhattanville had multiple opportunities to try and cut the margin, including a shot by junior Colleen Macedo (Norwalk, Conn.) in the 49th minute.
Freshman netminder Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.) continues to help the team on the defensive side, making five saves, while Horwitz was asked to make one save in the victory. Vassar finished with an 18-4 advantage in shots with eight on goal.
Manhattanville (0-3) will conclude the tournament tomorrow afternoon with a meeting against Elms at 10 a.m. Vassar (1-2) will take on Smith in the championship game at noon. Live stats will be available for the contest on GoValiants.com.
