DALLAS, Pa. – The Manhattanville field hockey team fell to Misericordia University, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon in the team's Freedom Conference season opener at Mangelsdorf Field.
Misericordia's Amanda Blank had a five-point contest finishing with a goal and three assists. The Valiants kept the Cougars to only one goal after the first 35 minutes of play, but in the second half the host team added four more goals to take the 5-0 edge.
Emily Foley got the Cougars on the board in the 10th minute off a penalty corner, with an assist coming from Haley Ellis. Blank had a hand in all four goals in the second half, beginning with an assist on a Samantha Sorokas goal just a minute into the final stanza. Five minutes later, Blank was credited with an assist on Ellis' tally as the Cougars took a 3-0 lead.
In the 63rd minute, Sorokas added her second goal of the contest from Blank. Three minutes later, Blank completed her five-point afternoon with a goal of her own, as she redirected a long-range shot from Kelsey DeBruyne into the net.
The Cougars outshot the Valiants 24-10 in the contest, including a 15-9 edge in penalty corners. In goal, Grace Riker made six saves for the Cougars, while freshman netminder Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.) made 10 saves for the Valiants.
Manhattanville (3-5, 0-1 Freedom) will travel to Western New England on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Misericordia (3-4, 1-0 Freedom) will get back on the field tomorrow as they host Catholic at 1 p.m.
