WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Manhattanville field hockey team rallied in the second half with two goals in the final 2:43 of regulation to earn a come-from behind victory 3-2 over King's (Pa.) in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
With the win Manhattanville remains undefeated at 2-0 in Freedom Conference play and 8-1 overall. King's dropped their first conference match falling to 0-1, while 5-3 overall.
Junior Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) had a great game with two goals for Manhattanville, including the game-winning score with 69 seconds remaining in the match. Sophomore Alyssa Tourdot (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) also scored for the visitors as well, tying the score late in the second half.
The Monarchs struck first as Calli Berryman tallied her third goal of the year off of a deflection from Shawna Walp at the 14:07 mark of the first half. The Valiants could not capitalize on any of their opportunities for the remainder of the half as they entered the locker rooms trailing, 1-0.
Over 18 minutes into the second half, Manhattanville finally got its break as Meenan was able to bury the ball past the right post and into the net for her sixth goal of the year to knot the game at one.
The Monarchs answered back with less than nine minutes remaining thanks to Walp receiving the ball on a feed from Jenera Quinones and blasting it just beyond the reach of a diving Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) and into the left side of the net to put King's up 2-1 with very little time remaining.
But after the goal the Valiants kept their composure and got right back on the offensive attack. With less than three minutes left in regulation, sophomore forward Megan Greene (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) passed the ball on a penalty corner to Tourdot, who shot from the top of the circle and into the net for the game-tying goal.
With just over a minute left in regulation and the game seemingly headed to overtime, Meenan came through once again and scored her second goal of the contest off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Chelsea Klein (Reading, Pa./Exeter) to give the Valiants their first lead of the game at 3-2.
The Monarchs had one last chance as they executed a penalty corner opportunity in the closing seconds. The Valiant defense was able to shut down the King's last effort, however, and hung on for the win.
Shots in the contest were in favor of the Monarchs both overall, 15-8, and on goal, 10-4. Penalty corners were also in favor of King's by a 12-6 margin.
In goal, Hilton picked up her eighth win of the season against one loss while making eight saves against a challenging Monarch offense. Collecting the loss was Megan Withrow who made one save while allowing the three Valiant goals.
Manhattanville hopes to continue its winning ways when they travel to Pomona, N.J., on Tuesday to take on non-conference Richard Stockton. King's will be back in action on Monday to conclude a suspended game against Marywood.
