PURCHASE, N.Y. – FDU-Florham's Kim Campfield scored in the seventh minute and the visitors never looked back in dealing the Manhattanville women's soccer team a 3-0 defeat in a Freedom Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Campfield and her sister Jenna both picked up a goal for FDU-Florham in the victory, while leading scorer Claire Donahoe had a role in all three Devil tallies with a goal and two assists.
Kim Campfield scored the first goal of the game at the 6:47 mark, as she half-volleyed a corner kick from Donahoe just under the crossbar for her second of the year. The visitors struck again less than eight minutes later, as Donahoe buried a shot into the top-right corner of the net for her team-leading eighth tally of the season.
Manhattanville had chances of its own during the first 45 minutes of play, most notably a great volley chance for junior Morgan Rebollal (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) inside 12 yards in the second minute, but the Valiants seemed a step slow on most of their through ball tries and went into the half down a pair.
The Valiants came out strong to begin the second half as well, as junior Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School) took a pass from classmate Brittney Smith (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) and fired a shot from the top of the box that required a diving save by Devils' keeper Melanie Pierson. Unfortunately that was the team's best chance of the second half, and Jenna Campfield added an insurance marker for FDU in the 83rd minute to complete the scoring.
For the match, FDU-Florham took 14 shots to Manhattanville's five, while also possessing a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior Brianna Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) suffered the loss for the Valiants despite making five saves, while Pierson turned aside all three shots she faced to earn the win.
Manhattanville (2-12-0, 1-2-0 Freedom) will host Wilkes on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the live GoValiants.TV broadcast set to begin at approximately 12:50 p.m. FDU-Florham (6-8-1, 2-0-1 Freedom) will host King's (Pa.) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
