MAHWAH, N.J. – Juniors
Morgan Rebollal (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and
Brittney Smith (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) scored less than two minutes apart early in the second half and the Valiant defense held strong the rest of the way as the Manhattanville women's soccer team came back to post its second straight win with a 2-1 victory over Ramapo College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at the Ramapo Soccer Field.
Going into halftime down by a goal, Manhattanville allowed a shot and ceded a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes of the second half, but the tide turned soon after when Rebollal knotted up the score at the 51:34 mark with an unassisted tally. A mere 89 seconds later Smith deposited her second score of the year – and second game-winner – into the back of the net to put the visitors up by a goal.
The rest of the match belonged to freshman keeper Bridget Miranda (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) and the Manhattanville defense, as Miranda turned aside all 11 shots she faced in the second half to pick up her first collegiate victory. For the match, Miranda turned aside 14 of the 15 shots on goal she faced.
Despite being outshot 27-11 on the afternoon, the Valiants made the most of their opportunities in the second half by scoring on two of their three on-target attempts. Smith led the team with seven shots overall over the 90 minutes.
Ramapo had the better of play in the first 20 minutes, as the home team earned four corner kicks and took seven unanswered shots toward the Valiant net, but Manhattanville held its ground defensively to keep the match scoreless. The Valiants gained their footing soon after, however, with junior Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School) rattling a shot off the post at the 21:37 mark and Smith putting three shots on goal in a five-minute span.
The teams looked like they would head into halftime knotted up at zero, but Ramapo's Susan Hayes struck with 68 seconds remaining off a feed from Rebecca Maccia to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 edge after 45 minutes of play.
At the break, Ramapo held a 13-6 edge in total shots, but the on-target attempts were much closer at just 5-3 to the home side. Miranda made four saves for the Valiants in the opening frame, while Ramapo keeper Talia Auslin stopped all three shots she faced.
Manhattanville (2-10-0) will kick off a string of five consecutive Freedom Conference matches on Saturday, as the Valiants travel to Dallas, Pa., to take on Misericordia at 1 p.m. Ramapo (2-7-2) will remain at home to take on John Jay at 4 p.m. on Monday.
