PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville field hockey team dropped their first Freedom Conference match of the season on Saturday afternoon to Misericordia by the score of 2-1.
The Valiants got on the board early in the contest when junior Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) scored her tenth of the season on a pass from sophomore Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) at the 7:22 mark of the first half. The Valiants carried the slim margin into the halftime break with the shot differential at 6-2 in favor of Manhattanville.
After the break the Cougars got on the board 4:56 into the half as Katie Gabrielle tipped in a cross from Haley Ellis as it was passed around the top of the circle. 13 minutes later the Cougars struck again on a penalty stroke goal when Samantha Sorokas shot the ball into the left side of the net passed sophomore goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) to give Misericordia the 2-1 lead.
The Valiants stopped a potential threat from the Cougars with about 12:30 remaining in the game as junior Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) stopped the breakaway chance by Sorokas. Goncalves made several key stops along the way to keep it close, but the Valiant offense was unable to break through as time expired.
Hilton on the day made three saves but falls to 8-3 on the season after allowing the two goals. The winning goalkeeper was Haley Brandt who turned away 10 shots and allowed the lone tally to Meenan.
Shots were well in favor of the Valiants at a 23-8 margin, while shots on goal were 11-5. Penalty corners were also in favor of Manhattanville at an 18-5 differential.
The Valiants (8-3, 2-1 Freedom) will be back in action tomorrow as part of “Play 4 the Cure” when they host Stevenson at 1:00 p.m., live streaming coverage of the game will be available at GoValiants.TV with the pre-game show at 12:55. Misericordia (3-7, 1-2 Freedom) will return to the field on Wednesday when they host Freedom opponent FDU-Florham.
