PURCHASE, N.Y.
– The Manhattanville field hockey team hosted Stevenson on Sunday afternoon as part of “Play 4 the Cure” in support of breast cancer research and won in style by the score of 5-2 as sophomore Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) took part in four of the five Valiant markers.

The two teams volleyed back and forth during the first 11 minutes of the contest registering three shots apiece. The fourth shot by the Valiants was taken by sophomore Alyssa Tourdot (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) who tipped it into between the goalkeeper and the left post for the 1-0 lead, DeChent sent the pass to Tourdot for her first point of the game.

Less than 10 minutes later Stevenson responded with their first goal to tie the game as the long shot in by Allyson Moody was blocked and bounced to Ariella Hopp who placed it into the open goal to knot the score. Six minutes later Hopp struck again on a penalty stroke goal that made it just past Manhattanville sophomore goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)).

With 1:24 remaining in the first half, DeChent tied the game at two when she tipped an airborne ball from junior Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) into the goal to send the game into the halftime break tied.

Less than three minutes into the second period DeChent struck again during a 2-on-2 break with Meenan as the pass was crossed at the most opportune time for DeChent to sneak it past Stevenson goalkeeper Kelsi Zimmerman.

After connecting on the previous two goals, the DeChent-Meenan combo switched roles at the 51:05 mark when Meenan tallied her team-leading 11th goal of the year with the assist coming from DeChent. The fifth goal allowed sent Zimmerman to the sideline as she was replaced by Katelynn DiFiore.

The Valiants added one more goal to ice the game with just under 10 minutes remaining senior Alyssa Nardone (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Regional Demarest) tallied her first goal of the season on an assist by Tourdot. The remaining 9:46 ticked off the clock and the Valiants had their ninth win of the season.

Junior defender Sarah Mason (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) had a terrific game defensively for the Valiants while both sophomore Julia Esposito (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and freshman Carly Brunco (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) each registered defensive saves.

In goal, Hilton collected her ninth win of the season against three loses while making four saves and allowing the two first-half goals. Taking the loss for the Mustangs was Zimmerman who allowed four goals while making six saves, DiFiore did not make a save in the final 18:55 but did allow the Nardone goal.

Shots were fairly even in the contest with the Mustangs edging out the Valiants 20-16, but Manhattanville had 11 on target to Stevenson's eight. Penalty corners were also in favor of the road team at a seven to four margin.

Manhattanville (9-3, 2-1 Freedom) will next travel on the road to Western Connecticut State on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Stevenson (3-10, 0-3 Capital) will continue their three-game road trip when they next travel to take on Landmark opponent Goucher on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
