GENEVA, N.Y. — The Manhattanville Valiants field hockey team dropped their first match of the 2011 season to the No. 14 team in the country William Smith by a score of 5-0 at McCooey Field as part of the William Smith Classic.
Leading the way for the Herons were Kiersten Hamilton and Annie Kietzman as they each produced five points, recording two goals and an assist each. Margaret McConnell added the fifth goal for William Smith.
Shots were in favor of William Smith by a 19-4 margin, with the shots on goal totals at 11-2. William Smith also led in the category of penalty corners with nine to the Valiants' four. Junior Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and sophomore Alyssa Tourdot (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) were the only two to record shots on goal for Manhattanville.
Collecting her first career loss was sophomore Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) who made six saves in the effort while allowing the five goals. The winning keeper was Taryn Little, making two save in the first 63:20 before giving way to Catherine Hare for the final 6:40.
The Valiants (3-1) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in the William Smith Classic at 1:00 p.m. when they take on St. Lawrence. William Smith (6-0) will play host to Lebanon Valley as the Classic comes to a conclusion at 3:00 p.m.
