PURCHASE, N.Y. – Despite some nice goaltending by junior
Brianna Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) in her collegiate debut, Serra Tumay had a pair of goals to lead New York University to a 5-1 non-conference victory over the Manhattanville women's soccer team on a soggy Friday evening at GoValiants.com Field.
In addition to Tumay's tallies, Cami Crawford, Hannah Speer and Leslie Smith also scored for the Violets, who had a 27-6 edge in total shots (14-5 SOG). Junior Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School) netted her second goal of the season for Manhattanville to break up the shutout midway through the second half.
Coming on in relief of freshman Bridget Miranda (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) in the 32nd minute, Scapperotti stopped the first five shots she saw, including a nice parry over the bar on her first shot faced, to keep the Valiants in the game until a pair of late Violet scores. The junior finished with seven saves in over 58 minutes of action.
Miranda made two saves and allowed three goals to start the contest, while NYU keeper Meg Patten had four saves on five shots over the full 90 minutes.
After a travel delay of nearly two hours pushed the start of the match to almost 9 p.m., the teams understandably took some time before they could find their bearings offensively. NYU struck first in the 17th minute, as a free kick from Tumay snuck through the five-hole of Miranda for her second of the year. Crawford doubled the NYU lead less than three minutes later with another ball that skipped by the Valiant netminder, followed by Speer's first career score at the 31:44 mark to give the visitors a three-goal lead at the break.
Manhattanville got on the board with just over 25 minutes left to go, as Occhionero took a free kick from 35 yards out that eluded multiple bodies in front of the goal and skidded nicely into the right-side corner for her second tally of the year. The Valiants played very well in the 10 minutes following Occhionero's score, as the home team managed to keep some possession and earn a few more quality chances at goal.
But the momentum did not last, as Smith and Tumay scored 107 seconds apart to give the Violets a 5-1 lead with less than 12 minutes to go in the match, and that is where the score stayed.
Manhattanville (0-9-0) will continue a three-match homestand on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m., as the Valiants host SUNY New Paltz in a non-conference contest that will be video streamed live (weather permitting) on GoValiants.TV. NYU (5-2-0) travels to St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
