Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Manhattanville women's soccer team dropped its penultimate Freedom Conference game of the year on Saturday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex, as Wilkes used a 27-10 edge in shots to secure a 4-2 victory over the Valiants.
Manhattanville (6-9-0, 2-4-0 Freedom) falls into a tie for fifth place with the loss but still has a sliver of hope left in the race for the Freedom Conference postseason; the Valiants would need to beat NSCAA #15 Misericordia next Saturday and also have DeSales beat FDU-Florham to sneak in via a tiebreaker. Wilkes (10-4-2, 4-1-1 Freedom) remains in a tie for second place with Eastern with one match to go.
Freshman
Rebecca Breve (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/American School of Tegucigalpa) led the Valiants with a goal and an assist in a losing effort, while sophomore
Erika Deetjen (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) also found the net for the visitors. Wilkes was led by Priscilla Bonilla with two goals, followed by Alicia Roberts with a goal and an assist and Brooke Edwards with a goal.
The shot total may have been heavily in favor of the Colonels, but Manhattanville showed plenty of fight on the afternoon. The home team went into halftime with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Roberts in the 16th minute and Edwards in the 38th minute, but the Valiants fought back to get within a goal on two occasions before ultimately falling short.
In the 57th minute, Breve made the score 2-1 by getting past the defense and burying the ball into the right corner of the goal for her fourth goal of the year. Both teams had chances to get on the board over the next 27 minutes, but it was Bonilla giving her team a two-goal lead again with 6:12 left on the clock.
The Valiants did not go away, however, as less than a minute later Breve found Deetjen for her second tally of the season to make it a 3-2 game with 5:25 remaining.
But with the visitors pressing forward looking for the equalizer, Wilkes capitalized and it was Bonilla again finding the net with 3:02 on the clock to secure the victory for the Colonels.
Freshman netminder
Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made a season-high 13 saves to keep Manhattanville in the contest, while Kate Mahoney had five saves for Wilkes in the win.
The Valiants will close out their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, as the Valiants travel to Eastern Connecticut State for a 6 p.m. match.
