Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville field hockey team dropped their final Freedom Conference game of the 2012 season to the FDU-Florham Devils on Tuesday evening by the score of 5-4. In the game senior
Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) scored the first goal for the Valiants, becoming only the second player in program history to reach 100 points for her career.
With the loss the Valiants are eliminated from Freedom Conference postseason contention, and will finish the year in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings. The Devils clinch the fourth seed with the win and will take on top-seeded Eastern in the Freedom Conference semifinals on Wednesday.
The Valiants had a chance to take the early lead at the 6:25 mark of the first half when junior
Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) hit the post on the first shot of the game. Just over three minutes later the Devils got on the board first as Lanie Andrews picked up her first goal of the contest, on assists by Rebecca Bruns and Leanna Grotyohan.
Less than two minutes after the Devils goal, the Valiants tied the game up as Meenan picked up her eighth tally of the season, the goal was also the 39th of her career. Meenan is only the second player in Manhattanville history to reach the century mark in career points, joining DeChent, who accomplished the feat earlier this season.
The score remained even for the next seven minutes until Andrews scored again for the Devils to put FDU-Florham back on top at 2-1 heading into the halftime break.
After the intermission the Devils got right back to the work and found the back of the net just 1:26 into the period as Andrews scored her third of the contest to give the Devils their largest lead of the game at 3-1.
DeChent took over for the Valiants during a short stretch of the game, after taking the initial shot that was stopped by Tess Loughran. DeChent regained the rebound and put it home to cut the lead back down to one. The junior then took the ball away from FDU-Florham right off the restart and dribbled down the field, weaving between players to score her second of the game and 29th of the season to tie the game up at three.
After about eight minutes of no scoring, FDU-Florham broke the deadlock as the Devils scored off of a penalty corner. Another eight minutes later, Andrews added her fourth of the game to put the Devils back up by a pair with 16:35 to go in regulation.
The Valiants had chances in the 58th minute as DeChent rattled off two shots, one that went wide and one that was stopped by Loughran. Manhattanville was also unable to convert on a penalty stroke chance at 64:18 of the game.
Manhattanville scored once more as senior
Lindsey Stebenne (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) picked off a pass from senior
Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and tipped it into the goal to trim the lead back down to one, but it was too little too late as the Devils came away with the win.
In goal junior
Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) took the loss to fall to 9-6 on the season while making seven saves on the evening. On the other end of the field Loughran earned the win making four saves, while Amy Defnet made one save on the penalty stroke late in the contest.
