Field Hockey Seniors Finish Off Careers with Loss to No. 10 TCNJ

The 2012 Field Hockey Seniors pose with head coach Kevin Kelly and assistant coach Eileen O'Reilly before Friday night's game.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville field hockey team wrapped up their 2012 season with a loss to NFHCA No. 10 College of New Jersey Lions by the score of 6-1 on Friday evening. The lone Valiant tally was scored by junior Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) to avoid the shutout in the second half.

Prior to the start of the contest the Valiants honored their five departing seniors; captain Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), Sarah Mason (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls), Rebecca McClintock (Accord, N.Y./Rondout Valley), Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and Lindsey Stebenne (Barrington, R.I./Barrington), in an on-field ceremony. The seniors have combined for a 38-37 overall record in their four seasons with the Valiants, the quintet also combined for 301 games played, 69 goals, 44 assists and 176 combined points.

On the field, the Lions controlled much of the game through the first half as they picked up a goal just under four minutes into the contest as Caitlyn Jenkins opened the scoring for the defending NCAA Champions. Six minutes later the Lions scored again as they tipped in a ball off a rebound after the initial save was made by junior goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)).

Through the remainder of the first half, TCNJ scored three more times including one more goal and an assist for Jenkins, who finished with a game-high five points. In the first two minutes of the second half, TCNJ increased their lead to six as they shot the ball from outside of the circle that was tipped into the own goal by Manhattanville as the Lions had their largest lead of the game.

The lone Manhattanville goal was scored in the 62nd minute as DeChent weaved around several defensive players of TCNJ, and landed the ball home for her 30th goal of the season. The goal adds to her already impressive season, as she now holds the individual single-season and career records for goals and points by a Valiant player.

During the second half the Valiants subbed freshman Courtney Ponte (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) into the game, as she registered four saves in relief while allowing just one goal. Hilton took the loss to fall to 9-7 on the season after making five saves and allowing five goals. On the other end of the field Roisin Dougherty (13-4) made five stops and yielded the one Valiant marker.

Manhattanville finishes the season with an 11-8 overall record and a 3-4 Freedom Conference record heading into the offseason. The Valiants will begin their 36th season in program history next fall with an opponent and date to be announced at a later date, be sure to stay up to the minute with all Manhattanville field hockey news on GoValiants.com.
