Valiants Win Third Overtime Game of Season, 3-2 Over Hartwick

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) netted her second goal of the game and 17th of the season to push the Manhattanville field hockey team past the Hartwick Hawks on Wednesday afternoon by the score of 3-2 in overtime. Freshman Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) also added her sixth goal of the season at a rainy GoValiants.com Field in Purchase, N.Y.
 
The game started out with McGuire netting the first goal of the contest on a redirect from senior Lindsey Stebenne (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) into the short corner of the goal to put the Valiants up just 4:21 into the contest. Hartwick came down the field and rattled off four straight shots of their own, two of which were stopped by junior goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)).
 
After a foul called against the Valiants rewarded the Hawks a penalty stroke, Hartwick capitalized as Kelsey Kimble picked the left side of the net to even the game at one a piece. Hartwick continued their offensive attack over the next 20 minutes of game time as they picked up six unanswered shots, with the final shot of the set being stopped by a diving defensive save from freshman Renee LaFosse (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack).
 
The next Hartwick shot came via the Hawks second penalty stroke of the game, Kimble chose the same spot and resulted in her second goal of half to give Hartwick their first lead of the game at 2-1. The waning 4:55 of the half resulted in neither side registering a shot as the game entered the halftime break.
 
Just over five minutes into the second half DeChent picked up her first goal of the contest as she evened up the game on a reverse shot that was lifted over Lauren Crimi to tie the game at two. Hartwick picked up the next two shots as LaFosse picked up her ninth defensive save of the season, and Hilton stopped another point blank shot.
 
The final 25 minutes of regulation came to an end quickly with shots in favor of Hartwick at 17-13; shots on goal were also in favor of the Hawks at 13-10. Penalty corners were in favor of Manhattanville at 9-7 through the first 70 minutes of play.
 
In the 7-on-7 overtime format the Valiants were awarded a penalty corner just 2:54 into the period, after the ball bounded to DeChent she crossed one towards the net that deflected off of Crimi's left foot and backwards into the goal to give the Valiants their third overtime victory of the season. The game-winning goal was her sixth of the season, giving her the all-time lead in single-season game-winners, breaking her record of five from a season ago.
 
In goal Hilton picked up her sixth win of the season after picking up eight saves on the afternoon and allowing the two Hartwick goals. Suffering her first loss of the season was Crimi who yielded the three Valiant tallies, while making seven saves in the losing effort.
 
Manhattanville (7-4, 1-1 Freedom) return to conference play this Saturday when they host the Wilkes Colonels at 1:00 p.m. with coverage of the game available on GoValiants.TV. Hartwick (5-5, 3-1 Empire 8) will return to play on Saturday when they travel to take on Houghton at 12:00 p.m.
