DeChent Scores Four, Sets Single-Season Goals Mark in 4-3 OT Win

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) blew past the school's single-season goals record and did it in style, scoring four goals - including the overtime game-winner just 53 seconds into the extra session - in the Manhattanville field hockey team's 4-3 win over Wilkes on Saturday afternoon on GoValiants.com Field.

For DeChent, who entered the game one back of the mark with 17 goals, her first career four-goal game vaulted her well past the former record of 18, achieved by Kristen Coffey '04 back during the 2002 season. The junior also became just the third player in program history to score four times in a game, matching the previous record shared by Cheryl Zicko '90 (Sept. 9, 1989 vs. Mary Washington) and Alissa Tyghter '07 (Oct. 17, 2006 vs. SUNY New Paltz).

DeChent picked up the opening shot of the contest just 16 seconds into the game that sailed wide of the goal. Wilkes regained possession for the ensuing 10 minutes of game action and outshot their hosts by a 3-0 margin; the third shot of the set was sent past Valiant junior Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) to put the Colonels on top 1-0.

As the first half crossed into the 18th minute of play the Valiants took back control of the game and rattled off four shots including one off the stick of senior Melissa Goncalves (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) that rang off the left post. Less than two minutes later the Valiants evened up the game on DeChent's first of the afternoon at the 26:12 mark of the first half.

In the second half of play, DeChent gave the Valiants their first lead of the game at 2-1 just over eight minutes into the second period, breaking the school single-season mark with her 19th tally of the year.

Exactly 30 seconds later the Colonels tied the game up at two when Ashley Hahn netted her second of the season at 43:58. The Valiants responded with four quick shots of their own but had no success, and then Wilkes strung together five shots of their own with the first four being stopped by Hilton.

The fifth was not stopped, however, as Wilkes took the lead back at 3-2 when Ashley Ream picked up her sixth goal of the year to put the Colonels back on top.

Fifteen minutes came off the clock before Manhattanville tied the game up for a second time as it was once again DeChent on a great individual effort to drive through the Colonel defense and send the game to overtime tied at three.

It only took 53 seconds in the extra stanza to put the Valiants in the win column for the third straight game, all of the wins coming in overtime. DeChent picked up her fourth goal off of a pass from Goncalves to send the Valiants to their walk-off victory.

For the game the Valiants outshot their guests by a 22-17 margin, with shots on goal in favor of Manhattanville at 17-14. Penalty corners were also in favor of Manhattanville at a 17-10 clip.

Earning the win was Hilton (7-3) after making 10 saves on the afternoon and allowing the three Wilkes goals. The loss goes to Alexis Reed (4-6), who made 12 saves in the game and allowed all four Valiant tallies. Picking up a defensive save for the Valiants was freshman Renee LaFosse (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack), who now has 10 saves on the season.

Manhattanville (8-4, 2-1 Freedom) will have a quick turnaround and play tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Nashua, New Hampshire to take on Rivier in non-conference action. Wilkes (4-7, 0-3 Freedom) will be back in action on Tuesday, October 9 when they host Susquehanna at 7:00 p.m.
