DeChent's 7 Points, Stebenne's Hat Trick Pace Valiants Past Rivier

Box Score NASHUA, N.H – Junior Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) broke the single-season points record with a seven-point afternoon against the Rivier Raiders on Sunday afternoon, as the Valiants eased past Rivier by the score of 9-2. Senior Lindsey Stebenne (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) also netted her first career hat trick with three goals in Nashua, N.H.

For DeChent she picked up one goal and a career-best five assists for a total of seven points to push her season total to 54, clearing the record by five points. Kristen Coffey '03 held the previous single-season points record with 49 set during her junior season in 2002. Her five assists also set a new single-game record for Valiant field hockey players.

The seven points also gives her 90 for her career with the Valiants, which places her third on the all-time career list for the Valiants. She currently is two points ahead of senior teammate Kayla Meenan (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) who moved up as well as she picked up the opening goal of the contest to give her 88 career points.

After Meenan picked up the opening goal of the first half after receiving a pass from DeChent it was smooth sailing for the Valiants throughout the rest of the contest. The next goal came off the stick of Stebenne who picked off a pass from DeChent and one-timed the ball past goalkeeper Mackenzie Flagg to put Manhattanville up 2-0.

DeChent picked up her only goal of the game with 20:20 gone by, as she placed the ball to the right side of the goal on the unassisted tally.

Junior Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) was up next as she earned her first career goal off of a rebound less than five minutes later. The Valiants took their comfortable four-goal lead into the halftime break.

With the start of the second stanza, the Valiants got their fifth goal from their fifth different player as freshman Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) got a goal off of a rebound to put the team up by five. Both McGuire and freshman Renee LaFosse (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) had a large contingent of family and friends in the crowd as both returned home for their first game in their native state of New Hampshire.

Stebenne notched her second of the afternoon just over 10 minutes into the second period, with DeChent leading her towards the goal with another solid pass to pick up her third helper of the day.

Savage got her second goal of the game less than five minutes later as she one-timed the ball home to add on the extra-point of Manhattanville's 7-0 lead. Stebenne scored once more in the 60th minute to complete the hat trick and put the Valiants up by an eight-goal differential.

In goal freshman Courtney Ponte (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) had stopped everything sent her way through the first 61:07 of game time but Rivier was able to stop their goal drought as they picked up their first goal of the afternoon with under 10 minutes to go.

Senior Rebecca McClintock (Accord, N.Y./Rondout Valley) capped off the afternoon for Manhattanville with a goal on the short side of the cage after taking a pass from across the goal-mouth from DeChent who finished the game with her fifth assist.

The Raiders tapped in their second goal of the game 1:23 later to finish off the scoring for the game at 9-2.

Final shots on goal were well in favor of the Valiants at 27-5, with overall shots at 35-9.

In goal Ponte picked up the win to move to 2-1 on the year after making three saves and allowing the two late Raider tallies. Suffering the loss was Flagg who played the first 60:21 of the game and allowed eight goals while making 18 saves on the contest. Colleen Albert came on to finish off the game and allowed one goal in the waning minutes of the game.
