PURCHASE, N.Y. –
After struggling during early-season non-conference play, the Manhattanville men's tennis team started its Freedom Conference schedule on Sunday afternoon against Misericordia and promptly returned to form, posting an easy 9-0 victory at the Manhattanville Courts.

None of the matches were ever really in doubt on the afternoon, as no Valiant singles or doubles entry lost more than three games in any match. Manhattanville was particularly effective in singles play, with four matches going either no games or one game above the minimum.

The quickest match of the day came at sixth singles, as senior Kyle McGowan (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) did not drop a game to A.J. Grasso, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and freshman Gabriel Berlingeri (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola) both ceded just one game in the second set, as Tahir bested Sal Saraniti at second singles and Berlingeri took care of Robert Knipper at fourth singles by the same 6-0, 6-1 score. At third singles, junior Andres Rivera had just one small hiccup in the first set of his 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Matt Erney.

Senior Michael Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/San Judas Tadeo), a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Fred Hockenbury at the top flight, and Chris Lin (White Plains, N.Y./Eastchester), a 6-1, 6-1 fifth-singles winner over Shane Hall, rounded out the Valiant singles winners.

Manhattanville also started the day strongly in doubles play, losing just five games combined in the three wins. McGowan teamed with Berlingeri for another blanking at third doubles, defeating Hall and Grasso, 8-0. Capozzi and Tahir followed with an 8-2 first-doubles win over Hockenbury and Saraniti, while Rivera and Lin completed the doubles sweep at the second flight, winning 8-3 against Erney and Knipper.

Manhattanville (1-4, 1-0 Freedom) will return to action on Wednesday, as the Valiants continue Freedom Conference play by hosting FDU-Florham at 3:30 p.m. at the Manhattanville Courts. Misericordia (0-5, 0-1 Freedom) will stay on the road to take on Immaculata on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
