McGuire Helps Lead the Valiants Past King's (Pa.)
Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Sophomore Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) had two goals and an assist for the Valiants on Friday night that helped pave the way for the Manhattanville field hockey team past King's (Pa.) College by a final score of 4-3 in Freedom Conference play.

The Lady Monarchs did not take long to score first, finding the net in the 3rd minute as sophomore Courtney Schaffer connected on a shot from the top of the circle. Schaffer would score again in the 29th minute to give her team another lead, but King's couldn't hold off the strong pursuit of the Valiants.

McGuire's stellar performance got started in the 13th minute when she put her first goal in the net on an assist from sophomore Breanna O'Neill (Hazlet, N.J./Mater Dei Prep).

After Schaffer's goal in the 29th minute, the Valiants trailed 2-1 headed into halftime. The shots were even at seven apiece and the home team had a slight 7-6 edge in penalty corners, as both teams had their chances.

Despite heading into the second half down by a goal, Manhattanville rattled off three straight goals to start the second half to give Manhattanville a 4-2 late lead in the game.

First, sophomore Sharon Konfederak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/The Washington School) hammered a shot from the top of the circle to beat King's goalkeeper Megan Withrow in the 39th minute. Konfederak's goal tied the game up at two, as the Valiants continued to pound the net.

Manhattanville took the lead in the 53rd minute after O'Neill linked up again with McGuire. On a scramble inside the circle, McGuire buried a shot off a short pass from O'Neill for her second goal of the night. Freshman Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) added to the Valiant lead and scored what ended up being the game winning goal in the 56th minute off a rocket shot on a penalty corner, assisted by McGuire.

King's scored in the 63rd minute to get back within a goal, but it wouldn't be enough as the Valiants improved their record to 8-6 (2-1 Freedom) on the year.

Senior goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) contributed six saves on 13 King's shots to earn her fifth victory of the season. The Valiants were outshot 13-12, but still capitalized on their chances to pull out the key conference victory.

Manhattanville will play next on the road against Western Connecticut State in the final non-conference matchup of the regular season on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Live stats can be found on GoValiants.com.
