Strong First Half Gives Field Hockey the Edge Over Western Connecticut, 4-0

Savage and Konfederak both had a big game to help give the Valiants the win.
Box Score DANBURY, CONN. – The Manhattanville field hockey team dominated the first half of play by scoring four goals against Western Connecticut, which ended up being enough for the Valiants to pull through for a 4-0 win on Wednesday night.

Four different Valiants found the back of the net in the victory.

Senior Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) started Manhattanville's first half scoring spree, as she connected on an unassisted goal in the second minute.  Only eight minutes later, Savage united with sophomore Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) for a goal in the 10th minute, giving McGuire her 17th goal of the season.

After a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play, the Valiants continued their offensive pursuit on the Colonials. Freshman Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) delivered the Valiants third goal of the game, as she took a pass from sophomore Sharon Konfederak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/The Washington School) and smoked a shot past Western Conn. freshman goalkeeper Kristy Trotta.

Konfederak scored the fourth goal of the game in the 30th minute to break it open for the Valiants.  Four goals in the first half was the difference, as Manhattanville won its second straight game.

Senior goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) started in net for the Valiants and contributed two saves on three shots from the Colonials in the first half. Freshman Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) was subbed into goal in the second half and made eight saves on 13 shots from Western Conn.

The Manhattanville defense has been strong on the backline, backed up by senior Julia Esposito (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich). Esposito and the Valiants defense helped keep the game scoreless, allowing Manhattanville to pull through for the non-conference win.

Manhattanville will play next on Saturday against DeSales in a crucial Freedom Conference matchup starting at 1:00 pm at GoValiants.com Field. Live video will be streamed on GoValiants.tv approximately 10 minutes before the game.
