Valiants Drop Freedom Matchup to King's (Pa.) by a 1-0 Score

Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – It was a frustrating day offensively for the Manhattanville women's soccer team at McCarthy Stadium, as King's (Pa.) scored off a set piece in the 20th minute and the Valiants could not find the equalizer in a tough 1-0 loss to the Lady Monarchs in a Freedom Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The loss is a tough one for Manhattanville (3-10-2, 0-2-2 Freedom) in terms of conference positioning and tiebreaker potential, as the Valiants fall into seventh place in the Freedom standings after today. The squad is four points back of third-place King's (7-6-1, 2-2-0 Freedom) and FDU-Florham after today with three matches remaining in the regular season.

The Valiants came out strong to begin the match, earning the first few scoring chances of the afternoon. Just 7:09 into the contest, sophomore Quinn Nicolich (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) rang a shot off the crossbar following a Valiant corner kick, but the ball stayed out and the score remained tied. King's had a corner kick of its own in the 20th minute and it resulted in a score, as Raquel Molina headed home a service by Sarah Borajkiewicz to put the home team in front.

Manhattanville continued to get chances after the goal, and again the squad was unlucky when an attempt by sophomore Alina Callo (Manchester, Vt./Long Trail School) caromed off the crossbar and out in the 31st minute. Other than the difference on the scoreboard, the first half was evenly played, with both teams taking seven shots and having three find the target.

King's had a 6-4 edge in shots in the second half, with neither squad able to find the net. Manhattanville managed only one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes, coming off the foot of sophomore Rebecca Breve (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/American School of Tegucigalpa).

Freshman Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) made five saves on six shots but still suffered the loss in goal. Natale stopped all four shots she faced to earn the win for the Lady Monarchs.

Manhattanville will look to use its upcoming homestand to get back on track as the regular season winds down, as the Valiants play the first of three straight matches on their home turf Wednesday against FDU-Florham in a crucial Freedom Conference matchup starting at 4 p.m. The match will be video streamed live from GoValiants.com Field beginning at 3:50 p.m. on GoValiants.TV.
