Field Hockey Season Ends Despite 4-2 Win Over FDU-Florham

Sophomore Rylee McGuire scored three goals in the win over the Devils.
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) scored three goals to help the Valiant field hockey team beat FDU-Florham 4-2 on Tuesday night at GoValiants.com Field, but the win was tempered by losses from Misericordia and DeSales that prevented Manhattanville from making the Freedom Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season.

Coach Kevin Kelly and senior Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) both broke Manhattanville field hockey records during the win over the Devils. Kelly surpassed Manhattanville all-time wins leader Diane Toth by tallying victory number 55 for his career, while DeChent moved past Danielle Lacroix '06 for the school's all-time assists record with 36.

DeChent and the Valiants might not have made it into the conference tournament, but she will end her career as the most prolific player in Manhattanville field hockey history by leading the school all-time in points, goals, and assists. The senior started her final game in a Valiants uniform by scoring the first goal of the game in the fourth minute as she worked her way down the left side and scored on a blast from the middle.

The Devils tied the game in the 24th minute when Nicole Hall scored a goal past senior goalkeeper Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)). Both teams were knotted up at one headed into halftime, but FDU-Florham connected first in the second half when Niki Ikeda gathered a rebound and found the net in the 42nd minute.

It only took three minutes for the Valiants to answer as McGuire tipped home a shot from classmate Sharon Konfederak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/The Washington School) in the 45th minute for the equalizer. McGuire was only getting started in the second half as she found the net two more times. In the 51st minute, freshman Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) blasted a shot from the top of the arc that caught McGuire's stick for the go-ahead goal.

The Devils could not get anything going after the goal from McGuire and decided to pull goalkeeper Tess Loughran with less than two minutes remaining to get an extra attack player. But less that 20 seconds later, McGuire received a pass from DeChent to bury her third goal of the game in the 69th minute. The goal not only gave the Valiants the definite win but it also awarded McGuire her 21st goal of the season while giving DeChent the all-time assist record at Manhattanville.

Hilton contributed two saves on seven FDU-Florham shots. The Valiants outshot the Devils 22-7 in the match.

Manhattanville finished the season 11-8 overall (4-3 Freedom) and in a four-way tie for second place in the very competitive Freedom Conference, but the Valiants lost all the tiebreaker scenarios to fall all the way out of the postseason. As a result, Tuesday's game marked the final collegiate game for Valiant seniors DeChent, Hilton, Julia Esposito (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Meg Wittner (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna).
