Field Hockey Drops a Heartbreaker to Misericordia, 4-3 (OT)

DeChent's Two Goals Not Enough in Valiants Loss
Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville field hockey team failed to close out Misericordia in the second half and lost in overtime by a final score of 4-3 in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

The Valiants held a 3-1 lead with under ten minutes to play but couldn't finish off the Cougars, who scored twice in regulation and then scored the game-winner 3:07 into extra time to pull out the victory.

All three Manhattanville goals came in the first half of play, as the home team built up an early lead. Senior Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) scored two goals to give her a Division III-leading 24 tallies on the year, while sophomore Sharon Konfederak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/The Washington School) also found the back of the net for Manhattanville (7-6, 1-1 Freedom)

Misericordia sophomore Lindsay Hischak helped guide Misericordia (3-8, 1-1 Freedom) past the Valiants by scoring two goals in the game, including the game-winner just three minutes into overtime when she muscled the ball past senior goaltender Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) and into an empty net for the score.

The Cougars struck first in the 9th minute of play, as Allie Elmes controlled the rebound off a penalty corner and found the net to put her team ahead.

But Manhattanville stormed back with three goals to take a lead into the intermission. DeChent stuck first at the 19:05 mark off a feed from classmate Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) to tie the score. The Valiants then scored twice in 1:28 later in the frame, as Konfederak scored on a penalty stroke and DeChent sent a beautiful reverse sweep into the top corner off a pass from sophomore Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon).

However, the home team could not hold the lead as the minutes wound down. Still up by two with under 10 minutes remaining, Hischak scored her first with 9:27 left to make it a one-goal game, and Danika Watto scored in the 67th minute to tie the game up at three.

The Valiants had the edge in shots by a total of 21-10, but they failed to capitalize on their many chances.

Hilton suffered the loss although she didn't play the whole game. Hilton gave up two goals on four shots, one in the first half and one in overtime, while freshman Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) played the second half in net for the Valiants and allowed two goals on three shots.

Manhattanville will travel to Edwardsville, Pa., for its next game against King's  (Pa.) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Live stats for this Freedom Conference matchup can be found on GoValiants.com.
