Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Freshman
Mikayla Allen (Bow, N.H./Bow) scored her first collegiate goal in a Manhattanville uniform but it wouldn't be enough for the Valiant field hockey team as they fall just short in their season opener to Southern Maine, 2-1.
Senior goalkeeper
Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)) was strong in goal but couldn't quite get the job done for the Valiants. On the 16 shots coming from the Huskies, Hilton turned away nine shots but allowed two to sneak by.
Junior Peyton Dostie and sophomore Allison Ward each scored goals for the Huskies, which proved to be enough in the end.
Dostie broke the ice in the 30th minute by moving past Manhattanville defenders to beat Hilton to the left of the net. Southern Maine would score again in the 42nd minute off an assist from Samantha Crosman redirected to Ward for the goal.
It wouldn't be until the 60th minute when Manhattanville finally got on the scoreboard. Manhattanville's all-time leader in points, senior
Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), struck through the Huskies defense and received the assist on a pitch-perfect pass to Allen for the score.
The Valiants wouldn't let up on the attack with 10 minutes to play, but the Huskies freshman goalkeeper, Amanda Kasbohm, proved to be a force in her first collegiate appearance.
Manhattanville will continue their play at the USM Field Hockey Invitational tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with a game against Johnson & Wales.
