Manhattanville Field Hockey Storms Past Johnson & Wales, 6-1

Box Score GORHAM, Maine  – The Manhattanville women's field hockey team notched their first win of the season on Saturday at the Southern Maine Invitational, beating Johnson & Wales by a score of 6-1.

Senior Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and sophomore Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) led the way offensively for the Valiants, as both players scored twice and added an assist for five points. Senior Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) and freshman Amanda Cirocco (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) also scored for the Valiants in the win.

Cirocco started the scoring with her first collegiate goal at the 11:17 mark of the first half. The Valiants did not wait long before tallying another goal, as senior Julia Esposito (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) sent in a beautiful corner which was put away by fellow DeChent from the top of the circle at 17:40 in the first half. The Valiants took a 2-0 lead into halftime but that was far from where the scoring ended in this match.

The second half saw five total goals scored. The first goal of the half came from Johnson & Wales freshman Cassandra McClaflin, who was able to score on a penalty stroke at 38:06. The momentum did not last long for Johnson & Wales as DeChent put in her second goal of the game, unassisted, just over five minutes later. There was no looking back.

Savage increased the lead to 4-1 on her first goal of the season, coming unassisted just past the 50-minute mark. McGuire had a big game as well, recording the assist on Cirocco's goal in the first half as well as recording her first two goals of the season less than four minutes apart from one another in the second half.

The win brought Manhattanville to a 1-1 record on the season. The team will practice hard this week as they prepare for next Saturday's match against Vassar College on day one of the Betty Richey Tournament.
