Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's soccer team hung with Trinity (Conn.) for the first 45 minutes of play, but the Bantams controlled action throughout and eventually ran away with a 6-1 win over the Valiants in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Freshman Rachel Zanko paced Trinity (2-0) with a pair of goals, while sophomores Abbey Lake and Alexa Menard had a goal and an assist each for the Bantams. Sophomore
Rebecca Breve (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/American School of Tegucigalpa) was a bright spot for Manhattanville (2-3) in a losing effort, scoring the team's lone goal in her first appearance of the season.
Both teams held their own for the first 26 minutes of the match, before Trinity finally broke through in the 27th minute on an unassisted tally from Lake. Manhattanville answered back less than five minutes later, as junior
Erika Deetjen (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) played a long ball toward the box for Breve, who beat a Bantam defender to the ball and sent it past keeper Monica Difiori for the score.
Playing with momentum on the home team's side the first time all afternoon, it took all of 3:18 for Trinity to respond, as Lake beat a defender toward the far endline and crossed back into the middle for an easy put away from junior Karyn Barrett.
Despite being outshot by a 19-3 margin in the first half, Manhattanville still found itself in the thick of things headed into the second stanza.
But the home team could not hold on forever, and Trinity eventually piled on four more goals to account for the final score. Zanko got things started with an unassisted tally in the 49th minute, as she corralled the rebound of her own shot and beat freshman
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge). Later in the half, Menard and Kendra Lena scored 47 seconds apart to make it a 5-1 lead, and Zanko topped it off with her second of the game in the 79th minute.
For the match, Trinity posted a 30-3 edge in shots. Diemicke suffered the loss, allowing three goals on 10 shots, while sophomore
Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) came on to play the final 35:32 and made one save on four attempts.
Manhattanville play its next two games away from home, beginning with a Saturday night matchup against Kean in Union, N.J., beginning at 7:30 p.m.
