Women's Soccer Falters in Second Half in 3-1 Loss to Drew

Sophomore Christie DeMarco netted her second goal of the year on Tuesday night.
Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into halftime despite a sharp shot disadvantage, but pressure from Drew eventually turned into goals as the Rangers scored three times in the second half to post a 3-1 victory over the Valiants in non-conference play on Tuesday night at Ranger Stadium.

Sophomore Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) gave Manhattanville (2-5) a one-goal lead in the first half, but Drew (5-1) got second-half tallies from Katie O'Keefe, Liz Loiodice and Emma Campbell to take control and pull away with the win.

Drew posted a 12-2 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes of play, but Manhattanville got the best of its top chance to take 1-0 lead into the intermission. After mustering only one shot in the first 34 minutes, DeMarco swiped the ball off the foot of a Drew defender and put it past Ranger netminder Sara Nash for her second goal of the season.

The Rangers came out of halftime determined to even the score, forcing freshman Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) to make three saves and see three more shots that ended up off target. The home team's persistence finally paid off in the 60th minute, when O'Keefe took a pass from Loiodice at the top of the 18 and found the back of the net for her second tally of the year.

Manhattanville put together a little sustained pressure after the Drew score, earning a pair of corner kicks and getting a shot by sophomore Lauren Guglielmo (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South), but the Rangers came right back and scored for a second time. This time it was Loiodice getting the score, which gave Drew its first lead of the night with 22:00 remaining. Just over seven minutes later Campbell struck to give the home team a 3-1 lead that the Valiants were unable to overcome.

Diemicke was busy all evening long, and finished with 12 saves to keep her team in the match. After Nash ceded a goal and made one save in the first half, Andee Higgins tended the Drew goal for the final 45 minutes and was credited with the win despite not making a save.

Manhattanville will return to GoValiants.com Field on Saturday, as the Valiants host Vassar in another tough non-conference matchup beginning at 1 p.m. GoValiants.TV will have the live video broadcast beginning at approximately 12:50 p.m.
