Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Manhattanville was less than nine minutes away from an impressive victory on Saturday afternoon, but the Valiants allowed Vassar to tie the score with 8:19 remaining and the Brewers scored again in overtime to defeat Manhattanville, 2-1, in a hard-fought non-conference women's soccer matchup at GoValiants.com Field.
Sophomore
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) scored her third goal of the season for Manhattanville and freshman netminder
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) made nine saves, but it was not enough to overcome a strong Vassar squad.
The chances were limited for both sides in the opening half of play, with Vassar holding a 7-6 edge in shots but neither side having a ton of great opportunities. The best two chances came late in the frame for Vassar, with Diemicke making a sprawling save to deny Chloe Wheeler with five minutes remaining and Sheeva Seyfi having her goal called back due to offsides.
Both teams continued in the same manner for much of the second half, with Diemicke being called upon to make a few routine stops in addition to a nice diving stop on Emily Krebs in the 72nd minute.
And while the Valiants did not have a bevy of great chances, a golden opportunity materialized in the 78th minute when sophomore
Rebecca Breve (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/American School of Tegucigalpa) stole the ball in the midfield and played it into the box for DeMarco, who was clipped from behind going for the ball. DeMarco stepped to the penalty spot and picked the right corner, putting her team up a goal with 12:38 remaining.
But the lead would not hold for the home team, as Sheeva Seyfi found the far corner with a volley from 20 yards out to make it a 1-1 game with 8:18 remaining in regulation. Neither team put a shot on goal the rest of the way, and the teams headed to extra time knotted at one.
As the first overtime started, the Brewers clearly were the aggressors, as the visitors missed two great chances to put the match away in the first minute. After taking the first four shots of overtime, Lucy Brainerd was able to find the back of the net at the 5:04 mark of overtime to send Vassar home with a win.
Vassar finished the match with a 24-8 edge in total shots, including a 17-2 advantage in the second half and overtime.
Manhattanville (2-6) will look to snap its losing streak on Wednesday, when the team travels to Long Island to take on SUNY Old Westbury beginning at 3 p.m.
