Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Vassar's Dara Davis scored the game-winning goal 10:16 into the first overtime period as the Manhattanville field hockey team was defeated 2-1 by host Vassar College in the first round of the Betty Richey Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The game started out well for the Valiants as sophomore
Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) scored her fourth goal of the season, when she received a pass from senior
Amanda DeChent (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and put a shot into the back corner of the net. The goal came just 2:27 into play and also gave DeChent her third assist of the season.
Unfortunately for the Valiants, that was the only goal they would score on the day. Vassar was able to get on the board just over 10 minutes later as sophomore Lauren Wiebe tipped home a shot from senior Anna Schroeder, who had two assists on the day. The score would remain tied 1-1 until the end of regulation, as the Brewers recorded a slight 19-16 edge in total shots over the first 70 minutes.
In extra time, Vassar applied heavy pressure to Manhattanville, taking the only eight shots recorded in the overtime. Just over 10 minutes into the extra session, Schroeder weaved her way through the defense and sent a pass to Davis, who put the game-winner past senior
Amy Hilton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kents Hill (Maine)). Hilton had a solid performance in net, turning away 12 of 14 shots on the day, but it was not enough to pick up the win.
The loss puts Manhattanville's record to 1-2 on the season. The Valiants will look to regroup tomorrow morning as the squad takes on Bay Path in the Betty Richey consolation game beginning at 11:00 a.m.
