Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's soccer team mustered little offense for the first 88 minutes of regulation on Friday afternoon, but the Valiants came through when it mattered most as junior co-captain
Erika Deetjen (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) scored the game-winning tally with 1:05 remaining to lift Manhattanville to a 1-0 victory over Buffalo State on day one of the 2013 Valiant Classic at GoValiants.com Field.
After recording just three shots in nearly 89 minutes to start off the game, Manhattanville pounced on its first great opportunity of the match to stun the Bengals. Freshman
Kerri Durkin (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) settled down a long ball from Deetjen and passed back to sophomore
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South), who found an open Deetjen running toward the play. From about 25 yards out, Deetjen placed a beautiful chip over the head of Buffalo State netminder Linda Banfield and just under the crossbar to deliver her team to a win in her first appearance of the season.
Manhattanville was outshot by a 15-4 margin on the evening, but freshman
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had few reasons to be worried thanks to a stellar effort from the Valiant backline, especially sophomore middle backs
Christie Freer (Southington, Conn./Southington) and
Dani Sullivan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), who helped to deter the Bengals at almost every turn.
Diemicke was called upon to make five saves to pick up her second shutout of the year, including a diving save on Micky Tinnerman in the 25th minute that was easily her hardest stop of the contest. Banfield made two saves to suffer the loss for Buffalo State.
Manhattanville, which improves to 2-1 with the victory, will return to action tomorrow on day two of the Valiant Classic at 7 p.m. against Farmingdale State, which fell by a 1-0 score to Eastern Connecticut State in Friday's first game. Buffalo State will face off with Eastern Connecticut in Saturday's first game starting at 4:30 p.m.
