Box Score GORHAM, MAINE – Despite outshooting Husson University on Saturday afternoon, the Manhattanville field hockey team struggled to score against the Eagles, falling by a final score of 4-1 at the Southern Maine Invitational.
The lone goal scored by Manhattanville (0-2) came off the stick of sophomore
Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) in the 62nd minute. Despite the Valiants outshooting the Eagles 15-13 overall, Husson (1-0) turned to its goalkeeper Abby Greenleaf, who made 10 saves in net.
The Eagles got started early, scoring their first goal in the 10th minute when it was Taylor Shaw beating freshman goalkeeper
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East). It took approximately 15 more minutes for Husson to find the net for the second time when it was Taylor Lovley knocking in a goal off a rebound, making it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles.
With the Valiants down 2-0, the Eagles were only getting started. In the 34th minute, Shaw scored her second goal of the match, beating Halloran on a scrum in front of the net.  As the first half came to a close, Husson controlled a three-goal lead over the Valiants despite being outshot 8-7.
Headed into the second half, sophomore
Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) took over for Manhattanville in between the pipes. As Hughes stepped into goal, Husson remained strong, scoring another goal in the 40th minute off the stick of Libby Kain to make it 4-0.
Down by four goals, the Valiants needed their offense to answer the heavy pursuit of the Eagles. It was not until the 62nd minute when the Valiants got on the scoreboard, as Smits scored off a corner coming from freshman
Maylis Burns (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), cutting the deficit to three.  It was too little too late for Manhattanville, as Husson took down the Valiants by a 4-1 final.
In net, Halloran made three saves on seven total Husson shots, allowing three first half goals before being replaced by Hughes in the second. Hughes made three saves on six shots while also allowing an Eagles goal. For Husson, Greenleaf made an astounding 10 saves on 15 Manhattanville shots.
