Box Score EWING, N.J. – Despite an unbelievable 25 saves made from sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades), the Manhattanville field hockey team struggled to produce offensively against NFHCA #11 The College of New Jersey, losing by a final score of 8-1 on Tuesday night in a non-conference contest.
Although Hughes gave up eight goals to TCNJ (2-0), the sophomore did so despite seeing 53 total shots from the Lions, compared to only took four shots on goal for Manhattanville (0-3). The 25 saves are the most saves by a Valiant in at least a decade and likely the most since Nicole Hunt turned aside 30 shots at Salve Regina on September 25, 1999.
Junior
Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del./William Penn) scored the only goal for the Valiants in the 18th minute, tying the game up at one. After the goal from Parsons, the Lions continued to press Hughes offensively, blasting shots from all over on the sophomore.
TCNJ forward Lindsay Hatch rattled off two consecutive goals in the 25th and 30th minutes, helping the Lions take a 3-1 lead into halftime. The Lions started off hot in the second half, scoring three straight goals in the first seven minutes before the game came to a halt due to a nearly two-hour lightning delay.
As the delay came to an end, the offensive pursuit of the Lions did not. Hatch scored the last two goals of the game in the 54th and 56th minutes, giving her a game-high four goals.
Hughes made 25 saves on 53 total shots from TCNJ, including 16 saves in the first half alone. For the Lions, three separate goalies saw playing time, allowing one goal on four shots from Manhattanville.
Manhattanville will next play against Smith College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the annual Betty Richey Tournament hosted by Vassar College.
