Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – Sophomore Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) of the Manhattanville field hockey team tallied 16 saves in net against host #15 William Smith on Saturday afternoon, but the Valiants struggled offensively, losing to the Herons by a final score of 4-1 at the annual William Smith Classic.
 
Sophomore Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) scored the only goal in the match for Manhattanville (2-7), beating William Smith (5-1) goalkeeper Catherine Hare in the 18th minute, tying the game at one.
 
For the Herons, Hannah Wood was the difference-maker on the field, scoring two goals against the Valiants. Wood collected her first goal of the game in the 23rd minute, giving William Smith back a one-goal lead at 2-1. Despite outshooting the Valiants 11-3 in the first half, the Herons clung onto a 2-1 lead.
 
William Smith came out firing from all cylinders in the second half, blasting 15 shots towards Hughes in net. The Herons eventually beat Hughes for their third goal coming in the 50th minute, as Wood connected on her second consecutive goal, extending the William Smith lead to 3-1. Alexandra Frary scored the fourth and final goal for the Herons in the 66th minute, sending William Smith to a 4-1 victory over the Valiants.
 
In net, Hughes made an impressive 16 saves on 26 total William Smith shots while Hare collected five saves on 10 Manhattanville shots.
