Kirsten Savage (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) scored two goals for the Manhattanville field hockey team on Friday night, helping the Valiants earn their first win of the season over Smith College by a final score of 3-1 at the Betty Richey Tournament.
Savage scored the first and final goal for Manhattanville (1-3), sending the Valiants past Smith (0-1) and into the championship round of the Betty Richey Tournament against host Vassar College.
After 12 minutes of play, the Pioneers struck first on the scoreboard when it was Kat Estes sending a shot past sophomore
Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) in the 13th minute on a penalty shot.
With Manhattanville down 1-0 early, Savage and the Valiants would eventually answer. In the 30th minute, Savage scurried past several Smith defenders down the right side before blasting the equalizer right by Pioneers goalkeeper Nora Demick.
Headed into halftime, both teams were notched up at one.
The Valiants continued to apply pressure on Demick in the second half, taking a 2-1 lead in the 45th minute when it was sophomore
Amanda Cirocco (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) collecting a rebound and burying it home for the go-ahead goal. It did not take much longer for Manhattanville to find the back of the net, as Savage tallied her second goal of the game in the 47th minute.
With the stellar play from Hughes in net, the Valiants were able to hold on against the Pioneers, picking up their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Smith. In goal, Hughes made eight saves on 12 shots while Demick tallied three saves on 15 Manhattanville shots, allowing all three goals.
