WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- The Manhattanville College men's tennis team competed in the King's Invitational at King's College on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15. The Valiants asserted themselves well and took first place in five out of seven singles brackets and three out of four doubles brackets.
Manhattanville's success began with junior Jan Senkerik (Zlin, Czech Republic/The Hill Academy) at the second singles position. Senkerik cruised through the second singles bracket and was able to secure a victory in the finals by a score of 6-0, 6-3.
Graduate student Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye) continued the trend at the third singles spot. Goto battled his way to the final matchup and won a tough match in three sets to claim a victory at the invitational. The score of the final match was 2-6, 6-0, 10-6.
The Valiants also came out victorious at the fourth, fifth and seventh singles positions. At fourth singles, senior Alex Fleischman (Riverside, Conn./King) won in the three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 10-2, in the finals. At fifth singles, sophomore Nick Schlapak (Dover, N.H./Dover) won in the finals in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 and at the seventh singles position, junior Maguire Balke (Yardville, N.J./Steinert) took home the victory in his finals matchup in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
The Crimson and White were just as successful in the doubles side of the tournament and took home first place at first, third and fourth doubles to round out a successful weekend on the court.
Senkerik and senior Juan Huertas (Bogotá, Colombia/La Salle (H.S.) (Calif.)), won at the first doubles slot and secured a victory in their finals match by a score of 8-5. The Valiants' Fleischman and Schlapak teamed up at the third doubles position and after they successfully navigated through their bracket, they secured an 8-7 (1) victory in the finals. The last team to take home a victory in their bracket was Balke and sophomore Jaime Peredo (Uruapan, México/Instituto Morelos), at fourth doubles, by a score of 8-1.
Several other Valiants placed well at the invitational as well. Huertas finished second in the first singles position, sophomore Dylan Crowley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) finished second at sixth singles and the pairing of Goto and Crowley finished second at second doubles.
The King's Invitational was a successful first weekend of play for the Valiants and they return to action for their home-opener on Wednesday, Sept. 18 against SUNY Oneonta.
