Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Manhattanville College varsity baseball team officially began its season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of Mary Washington by a final of 8-5 at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.
The Valiants were able to jump out a 3-0 lead in the first two innings, but the Eagles were able to claw back and take the lead in the fifth and never looked back.
Manhattanville got off to a quick start, as
Anthony Quatrochi (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) drew a lead off walk and stole second. With a runner now in scoring position,
Anthony Caputo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) collected the first Valiant RBI of the year with a double. The rookie came around to score two batters later on a
Matt Tuite (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) groundout. The Valiants picked up another run in the second, using a pair of Mary Washington errors to allow
Gregory Lucien Jr. (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) to cross the plate.
Facing the 3-0 hole, the Eagles began fighting back in the third. Owen Riley smacked a leadoff homer before Ty Lowe hit an RBI double, cutting the Valiant lead down to a run.
The Valiants would go back in front by two in the bottom of the frame as another Eagle error allowed
Anthony Pressimone (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) to score. The 4-2 score would hold until the fifth when the Eagles rallied for three runs, capped off by a two-run Bobby Ayscue home run that put Mary Washington in front the rest of the way. The long ball spelled the end of the day for starting pitcher
Ray White (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland), who was charged with five earned runs across four innings of work, allowing seven hits while striking out a pair.
The Eagles would tack a pair of insurance runs on the board in the seventh after a Nick Ciuffreda double drove in two runners before Noah Roots hit a solo shot in the top of the ninth for Mary Washington's third home run of the day and put the Eagles ahead by four. The Valiants were able to get a run back in the bottom half on Mary Washington's fifth error of the day, but the rally ended a batter later to spell an end to the contest.
Myles Durney (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) had a strong season debut, striking out five batters across 2.2 innings while allowing just one run in relief for the Valiants.
