Box Score 2 WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Manhattanville University men's tennis team got their first taste of competition for the fall season over the weekend as the Valiants competed at the King's College Fall Invitational. The Valiants had strong showings across the flights, winning a pair of brackets over the weekend.
Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) was the top performer for the Valiants in singles action, earning the crown in the No. 2s bracket. The junior opened up his run with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Penn College of Technology's John Finnegan. Guzman then rolled past Cody Zheng of King's, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the finals, ultimately defeating Wilkes' Sebatian Sylvester 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to win the bracket.
Lev Uitterhoeve (Maastricht, The Netherlands/Porta Mosana College) also made a run to the finals over in the No. 3 bracket. The rookie made his collegiate debut with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Misericordia's Chase Cavanaugh in the quarterfinals before outlasting Austin Kohler of Elizabethtown in the semis, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. His run would come to an end with another marathon affair in the final against FDU's Kevin Liwag, falling in a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 decision.
The remainder of the Valiants' singles competitors fell in their opening bouts. After having a bye past the quarterfinals in No. 6s,
John Curtin () fell to Lycoming's Luke Taylor, 6-1, 6-2.
Griffin Forberg (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) represented the Valiants in the top bracket, dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision to eventual champion Stefanos Billis of Elizabethtown.
Mario Alcala () was defeated by the No. 4s champion Connor Frey from Wilkes, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in his quarterfinals matchup, while
Justin White (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mary McDowell Friends School) was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Misericordia's Derek Burcik to open the No. 5s bracket.
In doubles action, the Valiants ran the gauntlet through No. 2s to earn another bracket victory as Uitterhoeve and Alcala closed out their first weekend repping Manhattanville as champions. The freshmen pairing began their run with an 8-2 victory over Lycoming's Logan Hammond and Mohamed Ebeid. The duo then bested Wilkes' Nathanial Rathe and Cole Riley 8-6 before defeating Misericordia's Cavanaugh and Christian Mazza 8-4 to win the bracket.
In No. 1s doubles play, Forberg and Guzman defeated the Misericordia tandem of Wyatt Fischer and Dalton Alexander 8-1, but their run in the bracket ended with a 8-2 loss in the semis to FDU's Matthew Emery and Ronald Duval. Rounding out the weekend action, White and Curtin paired up in the No. 3s tourney, falling 8-0 to Elizabethtown's Ryan Kraychik and Sam Langer in the quarterfinals.

The men's team is next scheduled to compete at the ITA Northeast Regionals in Madison, New Jersey. The four-day tournament begins on Sept. 26.
