Box Score

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville University men's tennis team opened conference play this afternoon at home. The Valiants competed against the United States Merchant Marine Academy which resulted in a un unfortunate runaway victory. The Mariners came out on top, 6-1. The Valiants now sit at 0-1 in conference play.

Manhattanville and USMMA started off strong with two tightly contested doubles matches. Lev Uitterhoeve (Maastricht, The Netherlands/Porta Mosana College) and Mario Alcala (Madrid, Spain/Hoosac School) resided on the No. 1 court where they were downed by Connor McQuade and RJ Novak, 7-5. Derwin Guzman (Bronx, N.Y./Frederick Douglass Academy) partnered up with Dylan Von Brook (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) who got a taste of doubles play for the first time this season. The pair faced off against Aaron Zhao and Patrick Novotny. The Valiants took the match all the way to a tiebreaker where they came out on top, winning 7-3. With the limited team members, the Valiants still dropped the doubles point as they could not field a third court.

The No. 5 and No. 4 courts concluded their matches first to open singles play. John Curtin (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) finished his match first on the No. 5 flight dropping to Fredrich Buquel 6-0, 6-1. Von Brook took over on the fourth court as his score would reflect very similar to Curtin's losing 6-1, 6-0 to Zhao. With three more matches remaining USMMA had the upper hand leading 4-0 as the Valiants could not house a sixth team member on the No. 6 court. Uitterhoeve finished next as he contested the only point Manhattanville would see. Uitterhoeve took a powerful stance against McQuade defeating him 6-2, 6-1. His partner in crime, Alcala, finished next on the No. 3 flight where he conceded to Novak 6-2, 6-3. With one Valiant remaining, the Mariners stood strong leading 5-1 in the final moments. Guzman brought his match to a tiebreaker, fighting for each point to the very end. He took a hard hit the first set falling, 6-3. The following set proved to be a much harder fight as the contest came to 7-6 pushing to a tiebreaker. Guzman was ultimately taken down by Brent Mathews to close out the entire match.
