PURCHASE, N.Y. – Boasting a lockdown defense that caused nightmares for opposing scorers all season long, the Manhattanville University women's basketball team has been announced as the NCAA Division III Statistical Champion for Scoring Defense for the 2024-25 season.
The Valiants allowed just 46.2 points per game, the lowest average across all three NCAA divisions. Manhattanville's mark was lower than Division I statistical champion UConn (52.2) and DII Belmont Abbey (49.3) for the best mark in the entire country across 1,057 ranked schools in the NCAA. Manhattanville took the DIII crown over Scranton, with the Royals ending the year with 46.5 points allowed per contest.
Manhattanville's scoring defense this season was the best in the program's recorded history, and the third-consecutive year that the Valiants held opponents to below an average of 50 points per game. The Valiants allowed fewer than 40 points in ten separate games this year and only surrendered more than 65 points in three contests.
Thanks to the team's stifling defensive efforts, the Valiants outscored their opponents by an average of 17.5 points. The Valiants forced 24.5 turnovers per game, averaging 21.4 points per game off of takeaways. Manhattanville also excelled in taking away the deep threat, holding opposing teams to just 3.8 three-pointers per game.
