BELLPORT, N.Y. – Corey Popowcer (Parkland, Fla./Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) shot a career-best 72 (+1) to claim the individual crown as the Manhattanville University men's golf team placed second overall at Friday's Saint Joseph's Long Island Invitational, held at the Bellport Country Club.
The senior Popowcer led the field of 19 golfers at the Par 71, 6,325 Yard course with the lowest round of his collegiate tenure. The Florida native shot a +4 (39) across the front nine, sinking six pars, before really turning it on over the final nine holes. Popowcer sunk four birdies across the back nine on holes 10, 13, 16 and 18 to finish with a -3 (33) in the second half to secure first place atop the leaderboard.
Popowcer finished two strokes ahead of Saint Joseph's' Bailey Meyer to claim first. The hosting Golden Eagles held each of the remaining top five positions, as Saint Joseph's won the three-team invitational with a score of 309 (+25). The Valiants posed a team score of 330 (+46), finished 11 strokes ahead of Old Westbury. The Panthers shot a 341 (+57).
William Billequey (Montreal, Quebec/Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) placed ninth, shooting an 84 (+13). The junior eagled on the par 5 Hole 13 and ended his day with a birdie on Hole 18, sinking six pars overall during his outing.
Tyler Rolston (Newport, Pa./P.A.L Jr. Islanders (NCDC)) and
Liam Parker (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) shot matching 87s (+16) to tie for 12
th. Rolston scored par on five holes, while Parker made his Valiant debut with a birdie on Hole 10 and six total pars.
Finishing outside of Manhattanville's scoring foursome,
Johno Hoins (Telluride, Colo./The Frederick Gunn School / Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) shot a 93 (+22) with two birdies and two pars to place 18
th.
