Valiants Drop Final Freedom Match to FDU-Florham 4-0

– Megan Springmeyer scored a pair of goals as the FDU-Florham Devils defeated the Manhattanville field hockey team in the team's Freedom Conference regular-season finale, 4-0, on Tuesday evening at Shields Field.

 

FDU took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute as Megan Springmeyer found the back of the net. FDU outshot the Valiants 9-2 in the first half and sent six shots towards freshman netminder Melissa Grant (Hampton, N.H.).   

 

The hosts scored three times in the second half, beginning with Lanie Andrews giving the Devils a two-goal lead. In the 56th minute, Springmeyer added her second tally of the night with assists from Andrews and Bethany Barrar.  FDU finished their scoring late in contest as Marybeth Weimer fed Ellen Siracuse in the 68th minute.

 

The Devils outshot the Valiants 16-9 throughout the contest and finished with a 10-7 edge in shots on goal over the Valiants. Grant finished the contest with six saves but was dealt the loss, while Tess Loughran also made six saves and came away with the win.

 

Manhattanville (8-10, 2-5 Freedom) will conclude the regular-season on Friday afternoon as they host NCAA Div. II first-year program Mercy College at 4 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field. The Valiants will honor their lone senior, Jen Ascencio (Monroe, N.Y.), in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of the contest, which can be seen live on GoValiants.TV beginning at 3:45 p.m. FDU-Florham (10-9, 4-3 Freedom) will prepare for the Freedom Conference Tournament as the third-seed and will travel to King's (Pa.) on Wednesday, November 3.
