HILTON HEAD, S.C.
– The Manhattanville men's tennis team got its spring season and Spring Break trip off to a successful start on Sunday afternoon, as the Valiants swept the doubles competition on the way to an easy 7-2 victory over the College of Wooster.

After playing just once during the abbreviated fall season, the Valiants looked good to start the full spring semester. Four Valiants were double winners on the afternoon, led by the first-doubles tandem of juniors Michael Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/San Judas Tadeo) and Dean Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and the second-doubles coupling of sophomore Karim Mahmoud (Cairo, Egypt/Nefertari American International School) and freshman Gabriel Pinto (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Internacional SEK-Ecuador).

Playing doubles together for the first time, Capozzi and Tahir had a good showing against Wooster's Landon Moore and John Schulz, posting an 8-3 win. Then playing at first and third singles, respectively, Capozzi took down Moore for a second time (6-3, 6-1) while Tahir bested Zack Rotter in straight sets (6-4, 6-1).

Mahmoud and Pinto both had slightly more difficult routes to a pair of wins, yet both players also went undefeated on the day. Mahmoud had an easy time with Schulz at fourth singles in a 6-1, 6-3 victory, while Pinto came back from losing the first set to defeat Paul Thomas in a supertiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6). Earlier in the day, the pair earned a hard-fought 9-7 win over Nick Biniker and Thomas at second doubles.

The Valiants completed the doubles sweep at the third flight, as sophomore Andres Rivera and senior Chris Lin (White Plains, N.Y./Eastchester) earned an 8-3 win over David Greetham and Zack Rotter.

Manhattanville (1-1, 0-0 Freedom) will return to the courts tomorrow, as the Valiants take on Macalester College in Hilton Head starting at 3 p.m.
