DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Junior Dan Fiorito (Yonkers, N.Y./Fordham Prep) pitched a gem on the mound to salvage a potential sweep as the Manhattanville baseball team took the final game of a three-game set, 3-1, against Freedom Conference foe Delaware Valley on Monday afternoon at Frank Wolfgang Field.
In the first game of the re-scheduled doubleheader, the host Aggies scored five runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-6 victory. Senior Alex Braverman (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) led the Valiants with four hits and three runs batted in on the afternoon. The Valiants finished the pair of games with 16 hits and nine RBIs.
Junior Pat Yannucci (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sewanhaka) took the hill in the first game and lasted 4.1 innings, allowing one hit but also walking four batters, including three in the opening inning to allow a run to score.
The visitors scored three times in the second inning as the first three batters - Braverman, sophomore Sean Ferguson (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) and freshman Hans Arias (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) - singled, doubled and tripled, respectively. The Valiants scored their third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Matt Petrunti (East Granby, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee).
In the fifth inning, Braverman picked up his second RBI of the contest with a single to score sophomore John Bucci (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) from second base. Trailing 8-4 in the following inning, junior Chris Nardozzi (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled home two runners to cut the deficit to 8-6, but the Valiants could get no closer.
Senior Justin Gray (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) (0-1) allowed four runs (all unearned) in the fifth inning after relieving Yannucci and picked up the loss.
In game two, Fiorito gave all he could in a complete game victory, allowing two hits and one run with three strikeouts. The Valiants took a 1-0 lead as Braverman continued to lead the offense for the Valiants with an RBI single. The Aggies tied the contest in the bottom of the third after a passed ball allowed Brandon Bell to score.
The visitors took the game in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly by Braverman and an RBI single by Fiorito.
Jim Calabrese went six innings for the Aggies and allowed three runs on six hits. With the victory, Fiorito imporves his record to 2-1 on the season.
Manhattanville (12-11, 4-8 Freedom) will host The College of Staten Island in a non-conference nine-inning contest on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. Please check GoValiants.com in the early afternoon for any weather related cancellations.
